Greetings RRA Neighbors,

The RAA, Gedney Farms Association and the North St. Association have regular liaisons with our local fire fighters to discuss issues of mutual concern.  It is imperative that we maintain close relationships with our fire fighters and to ensure our safety and theirs in case of a fire or other emergency.

One of our mutual concerns is the current situation with Ladder 34 at Station 7 (the Firehouse at the corner of Ridgeway and North St.)  The ladder truck is supposed to be the first to arrive on scene and focus on search and rescue followed closely by the engine truck that focuses on fighting the fire.  When a ladder is out of service the engine must do the search and rescue and then move on to fighting the fire.  Unfortunately, Ladder 34 has only been in service ~50% of the time and the service levels have been trending down and are expected to be largely out of service through September…and that is not a good situation for the RRA!

The city is planning to increase residency on the south end of town in a variety of ways over the next several years.  The full-time manning of Ladder 34 is a current necessity for our residents. The need for a fully operational ladder truck will only become more important as our city population and city-wide development continues to grow. The manning of Ladder 34 is an issue for the entire city, and not just the RRA.  If Ladder 34 is out of service and there is a fire in Rosedale, a ladder truck will have to come from somewhere else in the city, leaving that part of the city without a search and rescue crew.  Those extra few minutes could be the difference for our residents. The city is aware of our mutual concern, but a comprehensive solution has not been implemented to keep our residents safe 24/7.  Please help us to continue communicating our safety concerns with our city leadership.
